From Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning series The Empress (Die Kaiserin) to some of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls, Lisa Morgenstern has built a remarkable career at the intersection of contemporary composition, electronic music and cinematic storytelling. The Berlin-based composer, pianist and vocalist is known for performances that blur the boundaries between concert music, electronic live performance and contemporary songwriting, inviting audiences into deeply atmospheric and emotionally charged soundscapes. Since the release of her debut album Chameleon in 2019, Morgenstern has performed extensively across Europe and beyond, appearing at renowned venues such as Berlin’s Philharmonie and Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, as well as festivals including Iceland Airwaves, South by Southwest and Reeperbahn Festival. Her distinctive live performances combine voice, piano, analogue synthesizers, orchestral ensembles and, at times, even choir, creating immersive musical experiences that dissolve traditional genre boundaries. A defining chapter in her artistic journey has been her collaboration with the Munich Radio Orchestra and the acclaimed Bulgarian Voices Berlin choir. Their joint performances marked an important creative turning point and continue to shape her current work. The choir, awarded first prize in the Chamber Choir category at the World Choral Cup 2024 with a programme featuring her compositions and arrangements, also appears on her forthcoming album. Alongside her concert career, Morgenstern is an accomplished film composer. She co-created the score for Netflix’s internationally acclaimed series The Empress, winner of the International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. She has since completed work on the second season and is currently finishing the third, while continuing recording sessions with the Reykjavík Orchestra at Harpa Concert Hall in Iceland. Influenced by her German and Bulgarian roots and raised in a family of orchestral musicians, Morgenstern developed an artistic language shaped by an unusually broad spectrum of influences. After an intensive ballet education ended abruptly due to injury, she found her way back to music through inspirations ranging from classical repertoire to punk, metal, alternative pop and electronic music. These diverse experiences continue to shape a musical world that looks to its roots with as much curiosity and imagination as it does to the future.
At RADAR Festival, Lisa Morgenstern will present a captivating performance where voice, piano and electronics come together in a rich, cinematic and deeply personal sound world.
