Some people navigate the world quietly, treading softly wherever they go, leaving only a small impression, but an impression that lasts nonetheless. Richard Spaven is such a person, his humble attitude and down-to-earth, warm personality actually draws people to him and when you hear what he has to say musically on the drum set, you know you should be paying close attention. \u2013 Ian Croft, idrum magazine<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RADAR Festival Beyond Music has the primary goal to present musical projects dealing with a wide spectrum of artistic forms. When did you become aware of the limitedness of your own artistic form, or, to put it in other words, when did your radar detect the need for multidisciplinary?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up in the London scene has exposed me to so much diversity in music. I\u2019ve absorbed so many influences that when it came to the point where I was ready to create my own music all of these elements had to be represented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which three words describe the motivation behind your project?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambition, uniting, endeavour<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you could create a project in another artistic field or form, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably street art\u2026 strong graffiti leanings from my love of hip hop!\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>2023<\/em> is your personal year for\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seeing what\u2019s possible when you put your mind to it. I\u2019ve been touring constantly with UK rapper Loyle Carner. I\u2019ve also found a lot of fresh inspiration out on the road and am producing a lot while travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When is music <em>beyond<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The zone\u2026 behind my drums transcending conscious thought. Everything makes sense. Pure clarity. What is the significance of technologies in your own work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s always been turntables and samplers. I\u2019ve always respected the way DJ\u2019s and producers treat music and chop drums for example. That\u2019s been a huge influence on my own style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We often have resident projects at our festival that are spontaneous or dependent on variables, which makes them resistant to reenactment or repetition in the same way. In a sense, these projects remain here and now. What is your reflection upon \u2018here and now\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spontaneity and improvisation are crucial elements of music. The mission for me is to do that without alienating an audience \u2013 in fact using their energy and being inclusive is very important to how we play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What can we expect from you in Varna on 06.08?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A journey in music\u2026 Spaven style.
