About the event

César Latorre, piano • Mihail Ivanov, bass • Borislav Petrov, drums

Spanish jazz pianist and composer César Latorre creates a new live soundtrack to the  Buster Keaton vibrant silent classic film THE GENERAL. Made in 1926 and co-directed by Clyde Bruckman it is considered one of the masterpieces of silent cinema. This iconic film is  a hilarious comedy, full of movement and offbeat rhythm. Modern jazz improvisation is the best tool to engage with the scenes, united with strokes of classical and contemporary music. The band follows the action, the noise of the train wagons, the gunshots, and many other details. The band’s accompaniment also emphasizes the emotional aspect of different scenes, where feelings arise in conflict situations, fear, cruelty, broken hopes, and disappointment. The trio expands the sound palette by adding some effects, keyboards, and electronics. THE GENERAL is a story of war and a story of love, and the music of César Latorre captures  that duality with creativity and respect for this significant movie.

The event is supported by the Access Programme of the Art Office Foundation, funded by the National Culture Fund.
