Cesar Latorre: son of a welder and a housewife, who had piano lessons from his sister from the age of 4 and was terrible at dribbling in basketball, otherwise….

RADAR Festival Beyond Music has the primary goal to present musical projects dealing with a wide spectrum of artistic forms. When did you become aware of the limitedness of your own artistic form, or, to put it in other words, when did your radar detect the need for multidisciplinary?

The big limitation of the artist is his limited body. For musicians our art helps already to overcome that problem but not completely, just a little. Interacting with other art forms and other artists that feel/move/see in other contagious ways, is crucial to extend your own creativity. Definitely playing for movement/dancers has opened for me the gate to wanting to co-create more and play in ways I never did before. The way they talk about their sensation while dancing is amazing.

Which three words describe the motivation behind your project?

Enhance the beauty.

How much of your artistic devotion is inevitable?

All that I can control, and the one I can not control even more.

If you could create a project in another artistic field or form, what would it be?

Modern ballet.

2023 is your personal year for…?

Get more calm, get more grounded and try to eat less chocolate. Try. Just try.

When is music beyond?

When music plays you, and everything is fine.

Which is your personal radar?

In a social environment I hear/observe everything. Depends where you are, it can be tricky.

The format of RADAR Festival Beyond Music takes into consideration the artistic potential of new technologies and their supplementary functions. What is the significance of technologies in your own work?

New technologies extend the body of the instruments. I like to think that when the piano was created, it brought a vast amount of new music during centuries. That 88 keys were a great new technology – why not to try, maybe some new centuries of great music are ahead of us.

We often have resident projects at our festival that are spontaneous or dependent on variables, which makes them resistant to reenactment or repetition in the same way. In a sense, these projects remain here and now. What is your reflection upon ‘here and now’?

Here and now are random. Randomness creates moments and forces you to react in adventurous ways, is like a fourth musician telling you “listen to this”, “now I have a great idea” or “the best is to be quiet now”. Learning to read these messages is our task.
