Ukrainian-born and Berlin-based Kateryna Zavoloka, who goes by the stage name Zavoloka, is a blossoming composer, sound artist, performer, and visual artist that devotes herself to orchestrating uncompromising experimental music free from genre-dependent definitions and styles. Her works always stem from a very strong conceptual base, unveiling creations that are more than just music, exhibiting deep artistic research, and combining traditional and mechanical elements to show the boundlessness of her creative freedom. From performing tantalising live audio-visual sets and partaking in cross-genre art projects, co-running the experimental music labels “Prostir”, and its Ukrainian sublabel “I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free”, and label “Kvitnu” (closed in 2020) with Dmytro Fedorenko (Kotra, VARIÁT), forming a band with Fedorenko called Cluster Lizard, and being renowned for visual cover art creations and graphic designs, Zavoloka is well and truly making an indelible imprint in the world of music and art.
RADAR Festival Beyond Music has the primary goal to present musical projects dealing with a wide spectrum of artistic forms. When did you become aware of the limitedness of your own artistic form, or, to put it in other words, when did your radar detect the need for multidisciplinary?
For me, all art forms have always been exciting and essential from my childhood, as a kid I would go to various art schools for children. So for me to implement visual aspects together with the music was very interesting.
Which three words describe the motivation behind your project?
Freedom, Heart, Universe.
How much of your artistic devotion is inevitable?
I am not sure, but just trying to always stick to my own path.
If you could create a project in another artistic field or form, what would it be?
I don’t know anything about poetry, it would be interesting to imagine how it would be.
2023 is your personal year for…?
The year of the ability to do the impossible.
When is music beyond?
When you let go of intellectual control.

Which is your personal radar?
Intuition.
The format of RADAR Festival Beyond Music takes into consideration the artistic potential of new technologies and their supplementary functions. What is the significance of technologies in your own work?
Technology is just an artist’s tool used to convey messages and feelings.
We often have resident projects at our festival that are spontaneous or dependent on variables, which makes them resistant to reenactment or repetition in the same way. In a sense, these projects remain here and now. What is your reflection upon ‘here and now’?
I think it is very important to be here and now, it fuels creativity with pure energy, and it helps to be honest with yourself and express exactly what you want to say with your art.
What can we expect from you in Varna on 06.08?
It will be an audiovisual performance, в който ще представя последния си албум, наречен “Amulet”, посветен на родината ми Украйна и всички украински герои, както и няколко други творби.
